DFLer Doron Clark was elected to the Minnesota Senate in a special election Tuesday for a heavily blue district covering northeast Minneapolis. The result officially breaks a 33-33 tie between Republicans and Democrats in the Senate.

Minnesota Democrats captured the state’s coveted Senate majority after a blowout win in the state’s special election for District 60. Democratic-Farmer-Labor nominee Doron Clark won in a landslide, 90.

A tie in the Minnesota Senate should end Tuesday as voters decide who will fill the seat of the late Sen. Kari Dziedzic, who died of cancer last month.

Democrat Doron Clark has won the special election in Minnesota Senate District 60, confirming majority control for the DFL in the Senate. A special election was held in the district – which covers northeast and parts of southeast Minneapolis –following the death of Sen. Kari Dziedzic of cancer last month.

DFLer Doron Clark won in the deep-blue Minneapolis district with 90 percent of the vote, according to unofficial results.

Minnesota DFLers defended their control of the Minnesota Senate on Tuesday after Doron Clark won the District 60 special election.

Tuesday, a special election could break a tie in one chamber at the state capitol — but the other is still at a stalemate. Voters in northeast Minneapolis showed up to the polls, casting ballots for their next state senator after the death of DFL Sen.
